In 2020 and 2021 this HErZ branch is actively participating in the measurement campaigns FESST@home and FESSTVaL (Field Experiment on Submesoscale Spatio-Temporal Variability in Lindenberg, http://fesstval.de/). FESSTVaL is organized by all groups of the Hans-Ertel-Centre for Weather Research and supported by DWD with additional instrumentation coming from various national and international groups. Within our contribution, we plan to gain insights for measuring and characterizing gusts and night-time low-level jets from remote sensing observations. This information is then utilized to improve the gust representation of current and upcoming high-resolution reanalyses. Further, the dense network of surface measurements as well as profiling observations will be used to better understand the impact of boundary layer and surface heterogeneity on local scales and to better represent these heterogeneities in sub-kilometer scale regional reanalysis by employing a data-assimilation approach.
