Future regional reanalysis will move towards finer grid spacing with a better representation of land surface heterogeneity thus especially enhancing the representation of the boundary layer state. An application of a ultra-high resolution reanalysis is the investigation of urban climate and its variability especially with regard to urban heat islands (UHIs). Another possible application is renewable energy by allowing for better retrospective estimates for the potential of wind and solar power due to an enhanced representation of boundary layer winds and cloud cover.
